Nexus S - My tales and review

Like all, i have been bugged by the Android bug and after numerable mentions by friends, retailers and salesmen, i finally decided to buy 1 android phone. Initially, i wanted to buy a cheapad android,to be used as a second device, but some great cajoling by the retailer cell point, i went for Galaxy S, the amoled one. To be candid, i was bowled over by its looks and the high frequency reviews, i used to go thru had created extremely high expectations from this device. But hear me, i was sorely disappointed with the device on the very day one itself. It heated and heated and add poor battery, i was like completely irritated with the phone. Few days later i told my tale to the retailer, cell point, who was very sympathetic and asked me to exchange it for some other phone. I checked with a few friends in twitter and finally i narrowed down to HTC Incredible S and Nexus S. Eventually the retailer convinced me to take Nexus S.

To be candid, i loved the phone; the looks, the camera, the mail features and to say the least the option of downloading great apps from Market. So i liked the phone. But as i settled with the phone, the cribber in me had managed to find lots of faults as well.

However to be fair, i shall first write the good and then the bad and the ugly about Nexus.
Camera - its awesome. 5MP means 5 MP and no cheating here
Mail interface - Good and unless you are a BlackBerry addict, you will like it
Browser - Very good, you get the best of google's expertise here
Contact Search - here starts the woes, its pathetic to say the least. But by the way, you can use the google search option, which is good
Battery - bad and if i had not used BlackBerry 9000, i would have said, its pathetic. However, its nowehere near to BlackBerry 9700
Copy paste - hello, its pathetic, no match to either BlackBerry or Apple OS
Shifting of screen or whatever you call it - slow and very slow are the words. No match to IOS
Data Plans - although, i get free data usage on this device, but for normal customers, compared to BlackBerry, its costly and does not offer any advantage of shrinking of data and stuff. So it will hit you hard. But to be fair, you cant blame Nexus for it
Tethering - have tried doing it on XP and failed. Have heard it works on Windows 7 and Vista only, so chuck it. Or maybe, i am wrong

Well i have written enough and will continue........
One point i missed, since it cant work on BES, so you will not get any super feature of BES on it. You will still need to go to your parochial laptop for sending meeting requests and stuffs. With BlackBerry, i never missed any meetings. With it, i can.

3g WTH

3g is what 3g can. For a user, its increases the data speed upto 21mbps. To be candid, its doesnt do anything else. So chuck the hoopla and aura around it and just chill if you dont know a thing about 3g

Well is it worth the money, operators are charging. (link on 3g tariffs). Yes if you need the speed, the operators are promising. You must be thinking, how much speed i need. Well folks, speed is measured in kbps, mbps and stuffs like that. 1b =8 chracters so for example the word "beginner" is 1b of data. Then 1kb =8b and 1mb=1024 kb and then 1gb =1024 mb. Now go back to the word beginner and check how much of data you use and whats the kinda speed will suffice for you.

Hey i forgot to talk about pictures, videos and streaming. Let me put it this way, check any picture and check its size, and similarly check for video, audio and stuffs like that. Just check what you use on internet and you will realise, if you need 3g or not. Also for folks who do lots of youtube, their only crib would be why the heck there is buffering. Well if your network is offering speeds of less than 240kbps your streaming will have buffering. Why the hell, this no of 240kbps, forget and chill, you dont need to know.

Folks now as a guru, what advice do i give. Well you can use any amount of data you want but since you gotta pay for it, work the reverse way. Control, how much of data you should use and then decide on tariffs. Well freaks, control your net usage. For normal folks,2-3gb is sufficient amount of data and the amount is worth it. Obviously am not talking about folks who spend lives downloading movies. Holy crap, 1movie is 600 mb and so on. But why the heck do you need a mobile broadband for downloading movies. Use your cheapad and slow stationary connection for that. Well, read mtnl.

Lastly before you bug me, let me say, you cant use 3g on a crap device. You need to have a device which has capacities of 3.6mbps or more. Lazy bones, go and check the cartons of your box and find out whats the speed, the device supports. If you are amongst those lucky few who have lost the box, just google your handset models and you will find millions of links telling every holy grail about your device.

Also, before i end , let me share some secret on how to save your money while using a data plan. Well, let me give only one advice, keep your data off and switch it on only when you need to use data. You would have heard stories of how customers get billed like craxy for data usage. Well follow this secret. Nowdont ask me, How to keep data off. Folks if you cant do that, then chuck your smartphone and take a nokia 1210. Ok ok, check this linkon how to keep data off.

Good night
